Villagers demand compensation

Haflong August 1-The villagers of Rekho village near Harangajao in Dima Hasao district, demanded adequate compensation from the Railway authority and the NHAI for the loss of their valuable land and horticultural garden in heavy landslide due to wanton earth cutting in the name of BG construction and the land taken for the new alignment of Haflong –Silchar road( NH 54 E).

A stretch of 250 metres of Haflong – Silchar Road (54 E National High Way) near Rekho village was totally damaged due to heavy landslide on the night of May 21st. The Haflong- Silchar road which is always considered to be the life line of not only for the people of Dima Hasao district only but also for the entire southern Assam and neighboring states like Tripura, Manipur and Mizoram. Considering the people’s sufferings in absence of road communication the villagers of Rekho have agreed to give land for the new alignment of the road with compensation.
The poor villagers of Rekho village are solely dependent on horticulture garden for their livelihood. They maintain their families by the earnings from horticultural products. At least 6 to 7 families of the village have lost their land either by landslide or acquisition of land by the NHAI. Sri Akhub Hrankhol, Gaon Bura, Rekho Village while talking to this correspondent ‘we have nothing other than this horticulture garden for our livelihood, if the railway and NHAI do not compensate our loss, we will be nowhere, please help us’
They have already approached railway and the NHAI officials who have visited the spot but received nothing except some hopes. Therefore they have made fervent appeal to all the Authorities including the Dima Hasao Autonomous Council to save them and their families by providing adequate compensation to them at the earliest.
