Celebration of National Press Day at Haflong

Haflong, Nov 16 : With rest of the country, the National Press Day was celebrated at Haflong today in a befitting manner with  high ups of the district, heads of departments, other dignitaries, public and almost all the press persons of Haflong.

The programme was inaugurated by the Chief Guest, the Chief Executive Member of the N.C.Hills Autonomous Council  Debojeet Thaosen in the presence of the Chief Host, the  Executive Member(EM) for Inf & Public Relation Samuel Changsan; Guests of Honour EM  Kulendra Daulagupu, Deputy Commissioner Barun Bhuyan, ADC & PD Ramesh Thaosen, ASP (Security) Jayanta Choudhury; DIPRO & i/c Addl. Director of PRI (H) Ms Purabi Phonglo; Special Invitees ADC Si-Im Taro, C&PO Sanjay Jidung, Head of Department and others.
 That was followed by felicitation to Guests and press persons were felicitated with  gifts.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Guest Debojeet Thaosen lauded the EM  for I& PR Samuel Changsan and DIPRO & i/c Addl. Director of I&PR (Hills) Ms Purabi Phonglo and her staffs for organizing such a grant programme.  He encouraged the press persons for rendering more and better services as media is playing a vital role for nation building and has also urged to base report writing in fact and without bias. He asserted that ‘Pen is Mightier than the Sword’. As such, any wrong written report has permanent effect than guns and swords. Hence, every care should be taken in writing report.  The CEM Thaosen, expressed his support for freedom of the press and more transparency in public affairs, while positive side is always welcome and encouraged the local media to highlight the district so the district may be at par with rest of the country.
Speaking on the occasion, the Deputy Commissioner Barun Bhuyan, extolled the role play by local media and exhorted them to co operate with admistration for better service of the public.
In his speech, EM for education Kulendra Daulagupu stressed the necessity of supporting local newspapers so that they may serve the district better in future. He also insisted the press persons for more and greater coverage of the district to create more awareness among the general public and highlight the district to the notice of outside the district.
ADC & P.D. of DRDA Ramesh Thaosen acclaimed the successful ceremony on the part of the organizing Department; while the Additional Superintendent of Police (Security) Jayanta Choudhury, in his short speech offered to checked looseness among the civil as well as Police.
The Chief Host, EM  Samuel Changsan thanked all the Guests and the participants. He expressed satisfaction over attendance and affirmed that a better programme will be organized again, in which all the heads of Department under administrative control of N.C.Hills Autonomous Council, all under district Administration, NGOs, and others will be invited.EM Changsan also highlighted the important role of the press and all possible help and co operation will be extended to local media persons.
Earlier, the DIPRO & i/c Addl. Director of PRI (Hills) Ms Purabi Phonglo welcome the guests and participants. She also dwelled at length about the topic of the day “Transparency in Public Affairs : Role of the Press’. Ms Phonglo also sought more co operation from the media.
More details about the theme of the Day ‘Transparency in Public Affairs : Role of the Press’ was given, with the history of the ‘National Press day, by the Editor of the Haflong News Lalkam Hengna. He presented speech papers to all dignitaries and emphasized openness, transparency in Public affairs, and adherence to journalism with knowing boundaries. ( see editorial)
