Kuki Traditional Dance
Haflong, November 2, 2020 : The Kuki’s Autumnal festival ‘Chavang
Kut’ was celebrated in most of the Kuki villages in Dima Hasao on 1st November
2020, starting its celebration of 70th Kuki Students’ Organaization
Assam(KSOAssam) foundation Day on 31st October 2020.
However, due to COVID-19 pandemic, the festival could not be
organized in more populated and nearby town areas. Those villagers who
organized the two events also did not allowed outsiders to join the celebration
due to COVID-19 pandemic protocol.
The villages like Lasang, Nomjang, Changpijang, Pangmuol,
P.Leikul, Boljang, etc. In Borail MAC Constituency celebrated both the ‘KSOA
Day’ and Kuki Chavang Kut with day and night programme in respective villages
by observing COVID-19 pandemic protocol.
In Diger-Kuki area, some villages celebrated in respective
villages. However, in few smaller villages in remote area celebrated in group
at Mongjang village.
One most mentionable
celebration was the celebration of Kuki Chavang Kut at Lodi Kuki village, most
remote area in Borail MAC Constituency. The day was graced by local MAC
Ngulminthang (Amin) Lenthang as Chief Guest, while Miss Pinky Kimneinem
Changsan, Asstt. Commissioner , Silchar attended as Guest of honour.
It is notable that the Kuki word ‘Chavang’ means ‘Autumn’, while
‘Kut’ refers to ‘Festival’. As such, ‘Chavang Kut’ is celebrated after
harvesting to thank ‘Chungmangpa’ (God in Heaven) for his blessings and saving
through the year.
The modern ‘Kuki Chavang
Kut’ is celebrated on 1st November of every Calendar year, which is a
recognized by ‘N.C.Hills Autonomous Council’ in Dima Hasao, ‘Karbi Anglong
Autonomous Council’ in Karbi Anglong and Hamren districts as local Holiday,
while it is a recognized restricted Holiday in the rest of Assam state.
On the Chavang Kut Day, all the Kukis, young and old dressed in
Kuki traditional attires, gathered together in the celebration ground. The
‘Kutpa’ (Chief Host), in a dice went out to the gate, welcome and led in the
‘Jin-Gun’ (Chief Guest) and other ‘Jin’ (Guests) whiles the entire mass
gathering stand and beat gongs.
Then, as soon as the ‘Jin-Gun’ unfurled the ‘Kut Ponlap’ (Kut
flag), the mass gathering will raise Kuki traditional slogan ‘Li Li Li Li
Ho........’, which is immediately followed by presentation of one traditional
dance.
After taking seats by VIPs, the youth will performed many
traditional dances one by one and presented songs.
After public gathering, the youth usually held various traditional
games and sports and other competitions.
In the evening Cultural function is organized, such as musical
nite, selection of ‘Mr and Miss Kut’ and modern songs and dances.
