KIA and Kuki Innpi Barack Valley presented Kuki traditional Shawl to DC Karimganj, 27th July,2011
The leaders of the Barak Valley Kuki Innpi paid a Good Will visit to Songpijang on 27th August,2011 under the leadership of its President Fonidhar Chorei( alias Ngirbulbum Aithingrok). The leaders, comprising of Fonidhar Chorei and three others have friendly meeting and discussion over the relationship between the Kuli Inpi Assam(KIA) and Barak Valley Kuki Innpi (BVKI).

They also thanked the KIA for extending support that helped them get Schedule Tribes (ST) Certificate in the name of Kuki tribes from the Government of Assam since recently. This certificate solved many problem which they have been facing since along time, since the necessity of such Tribes/ Caste Certificate was made compulsory by the Government of India. They have been struggling for years together but could not succeed earlier. Now, they began to enjoy this certificate and such facilities from the Government since July 27,2011 due to the help of KIA.
The story of  ‘How Kuki Innpi was formed in Barak Valley’  goes like this. (Barak Valley mainly include three districts of Assam, such as Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi.)  In the year 1974, the Chorei Students’ Union was formed in Sielmat of Churachanpur, Manipur. In 1978, Tangpui Students’ Association was formed in Manikchand, Karimganj, that was followed by formation of many other organizations in Barak Valley. Since that time, the organizations have been striving for getting Schedule Tribe (ST) Certificate being they belongs to such tribe.
The Tangpui Students’ Association (TSA) had approach the then Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil) of Karimganj Shri. A.Singh, who issued the first ST Certificate to the President of the TSA Shri. Fonidhar Chorei as Chorei belongs  to one of Kuki sub-tribe.
Again, under the authority of SDO(Civil) of Karimganj Shri. H.G.Huda they got some ST Certificate as belonging to Kuki tribe in the year 1980. That was not sufficient for all others. Then, in the year 1984, they learnt that the Tribal Sangha was issuing ST Certificate. Thus, they approached and consulted the Tribal Sangha. They, therefore, under the guidance and advised of the General Secretary of All Assam Tribal Sangha(AATS), formed the Karimganj District Committee of Tribal Sangha and received the approval of the  AATS in its Silver Jubillee Celebration at Tipkai of Dhubri district of Assam. Shri. Fonidhar Chorai was the first President of the Committee i.e. Karimganj District Tribal Sangha (KDTS). They, however, faced problem because no one of the AATS knows about  the exact origin of their tribe ‘Chorei’.
Therefore, some educated persons, have collected and studied various records, traditional songs, folktales, folklores, customs and related references; besides, the book written by S. Barkakati ‘Assam at a glance’.From all these studies they came to learn that they, the Chorei belongs to Kuki tribe. As such, from that time the Chorei people have been getting ST Certificates in the name and belonging under the Kuki community. However, there was no official or mass recognition till 1995.
In the year 1995, during the term of Shri. J.I.Kathar ( John Ingti Kathar) as Deputy Commissione of Karimganj, they got official recognition of ‘Chorei is one of the Kuki tribes’ or ‘Chorei belongs to Kuki Community’. Then, in the recent political development some Borman complained that Chorei does not belongs to Kuki tribe. There after, the All Assam Tribal Sangha (AATS) denied to issue them ST Certificate as Kuki tribe. So, they approached many authorities, including the former Minister for Plain Tribes Welfare but there was not much response. They, then, approached the Kuki Inpi Assam, Hq. Songpijang, Haflong. In response to the request, the leaders of the then KIA visited them at Karimganj and met the Deputy Commissioner of Karimganj Jiten Borguyari. The KIA leaders, such as Shri. A.Lenthang President, Shri. T.Changsan Vice-President and others informed the DC and convinced him  over the matter on 20 January, 2011. Then, with the help and initiative of the DC J.Borguyari, the Government issued a letter to the Barak Valley Kuki Innpi on 27th July,2011 that they ( the Chorei)belongs to Kuki tribe and allowed to get ST Certificates by the Chorei people in the name of Kuki tribe.
