D.R. Sachdeva and Vidya Bhusan define Kinship as the bond of blood or marriage which binds people togather in a groups. According to Rivers, kinship is the social recognition of biologal ties .kinship has two socual implications for all individuals first, its one of several attachments that all people have, a fundamental tie. Second, permits the social life of most people, in all societies, people are bound togather in groups by various kinds of bonds. The most universal and the most basic of these bonds is that which is based on reproduction,an inherent human drive, and is called kinship. The first kind of bond ,which arises out of a socially or legally defined marital relationship is called affinal kinship, and the relatives so related are called affinal kin.The affinal kin are not connected to each other through blood ,whichis the case with relatives of the second kind, enumerated above, who are called consanguineos kin. The relationship based on blood-ties is known as consanguineous(sam blood) kinship. A universal example of the over riding nature of social recognition is the practice of adoption. An adopted is everywhere treated as if it were one’s own biologically produced offspring. So in kinship, social recognition overrides biological facts.
If a person is related to ego directely, then he is ego’s primary kin; one’s father is one’s primary consanguineous, and one’s wife one,s primary affinal kin.
Any kin related to ego through primary kin, themselves being primary kin of ego’s primary kin, are our kin of the secondary degree; eg. Ego’s father’s brother, or ego,s stepmother are egos,s secondary consanguineous kin, and secondary affinal kin respectively. Kikewise one’s wife’s brother is one’s affinal secondary kin. In the same vein, the secondary kin of our primary kin and the primary kinof our secondary kin will be our tertiary kin. The degree of kinship can thus be calculated, at least theoretially, to the nth degree. The modern western kinship term is a narrow-range system, whereas the primitive sib ia a broad-range system osf kinship.
Kinship terms are those terms which are used in designating kin of various types. Morgan made an important study of kinship terms. He classified these terms into two – classificatory and descriptive system. (I) Classificatory system: under it, the various kins are included in one category and all referred to all by the same term, thus, the term ‘uncle’ is a classificatory term. It is used for Chacha, mama, mausa, foota, taoo, etc. see p-3
Among Kuki clans hepu is por father’s father, mother’s father’, mother’s brother, wife’s father, mother’s brother’s son, wife,s brother, wife’s brother’s son, wife’s brother, wife,s brother,s son. Thus, people of various age-groups are designated by the same term.(II) Descriptive system: under this, one term refers to only one relation.it describes the exact relation of a person towards another. For instance, father is a descriptive term. Similarly, mother is a descriptive term. It may be remarked that there is no place in the world where either the pure descriptive or the pure classificatory system is used. Both the systems are found prevalent. Kinship usages include (I) Avoidance (II) Jocking Relationship (III) Teknonymy (IV) Avenclate (V) Animate and (VI) Couvade.
