NFR Construction Tunnel No.10 Made Through


Haflong: In yet another feat of 2014-15, the Construction Organisation of N.F.Railway has in a major breakthrough successfully made through the much awaited & difficult   tunnel, tunnel No. 10 which is 3.235 Km long in the Lumding – Silchar gauge  conversion  project,reports  Sr. PRO/Con NFRailway, Maligaon on Oct 19 in a e-press statement.

This was done today (19.10.2014) at 08.00 hrs. with underground excavation  work from both ends met each other. This  important milestone was widely cheered by every one present at that time. This is the longest tunnel in the entire project and is situated near New Haflong station building and passes below Haflong.
The work of this tunnel was started in Sept,2005 but due to several Geological Problems, work did not progress well initially. However from 2012 onward the work of remaining portion of the tunnel could progress well & now it has been opened. The balance work of tunnel i.e. benching, lining & invert will be completed before 31.01.2015 during Mega Block period.
Very adverse geological conditions were encountered during underground excavation of this tunnel and its completion has seen as a major challenge for the construction engineers of N.F.Railway. In fact this is the most critical activity of the Lumding-Silchar GC project. For tackling all geological hurdles, consultancy services of Central Institute of Fuel & Mining Research (CIFMR), Roorkee were utilized. Suitable changes in design & tunnel support system were made and from 2012 onwards progress of about 60m per month was steadily achieved.
This is one of the 17 tunnels in the entire alignment of Lumding-Silchar gauge conversion project having a total of 11168 running meters.
As proposed other works like  earth filling, construction of major and minor bridges,   station buildings, Track linking etc. are going on satisfactorily as part of the  Mega Block works.  Present overall progress of work is 96%. N.F.Railway Construction is confident to complete the Lumding
-Silchar gauge conversion by 31.03.2015. The main contractor for this tunnel is Apex-ABCI joint venture and approx cost of the work is around 233 crores.
