Crack In Tunnel No.10 of Newly Conversed B.G. Railway

Haflong, May 7: In a shocking revelation, about  30-40m-long crack was spotted   on the inside wall of railway tunnel No. 10, along the Lumding-Silchar track, following heavy rainfall for over two weeks, that resulted in cancellation of all the trains along the route on 26 April and 27 April last.

When media persons visited the site on 30 April, railway authorities were repairing the crack under the supervision of executive engineer (construction), Northeast Frontier Railway, S.K.Paul, who  refused to comment on the issue when asked. The Lumding-Silchar railway track has been closed for the past five days after landslides in Phaiding, between Mahur and Maibang railway stations, and in Harangajao.

The Lumding-Silchar track was converted from metre gauge to broad gauge last year and a goods train service was started on March 25, 2015 and passenger trains started plying on November 21.
Earlier, chief bridge engineer, Northeast Frontier Railway, Alok Kumar Verma, had sent a report to the Lumding divisional railway manager, recommending suspension of passenger trains between New Haflong and Ditokcherra stations because of the poor condition of bridges, tunnels and cuttings. The 210km Lumding-Silchar track has 79 major bridges, 340 minor bridges and 21 tunnels. There are altogether 33 stations in the section.Railway authorities have been carrying out repairs on a war footing so that passenger train services can resume as soon as possible.
