HAFLONG, June 8: Thousands took part in a mass rally at Haflong on May 31 last, organized by the all Apex Body and Students’ Organizations of this Dima Hasao district against the Union Cabinet decision to include Bodo and Karbi ST (Plains) into S.T. (Hills).

The rally was started from Cultural Institute Hall to Council Rotary and on returning back, they submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister of Assam Sorbananda Sonowal through the Deputy Commissioner of Dima Hasao district in his office at Haflong, urging him to move Central Government not to include the Bodo tribes in Dima Hasao and Karbianglong in S.T.(Hills) as it will deprive the real hills tribal people.
According to the memorandum, the present 5% reserved quota for ST (Hills) in Assam is enjoyed by more than 16 tribes while the Bodo Kachari is the second largest tribal population in the state enjoying a quota of 10% reservation in all area. Besides, they are more advance economically, politically and educationally; which the real ST(Hills) communities could not compete with. If Bodos are included in ST Hills they will be having 15% of reservation which will consequently oppressed and overshadowed the weaker and indigenous tribal community leaving in the two hills district of Assam. As such, this steps will destabilize the integrity of the people of two district and it clearly indicates the negligence towards the two district by the central government. Hence, the demand to review the decision and not include the .se communities in S.T.(hills) category.
The rally was participated by EMs like Nirmal Langthasa, Mahendra Kemprai, former EM Kalijoy Sengyung and President of JNH Kalyan Daulagupu, other leaders, senior citizens, students and general public.
