Understanding Dipa Karmakar's 14.850 score that fetched her a finals berth

Dipa Karmakar created history by becoming the first Indian gymnast to enter the Olympic finals at the Rio Olympic Centre on Sunday. The 22-year-old qualified for the final round in the individual vault final of artistic gymnastics after finishing eighth on the standings.

Many back home were left scratching their heads over the scoring system. The achievement gives us an opportunity to look at how scores are calculated and understand the nuances of the sport. She competes in the final round on August 14.
The new scoring system, introduced after the 2004 Athens Games, sought to balance the weightage given to both difficulty and execution during a vault.
There are eight elements in each of the performance, including flipping, twisting, turning and pirouetting. And the gymansts are judged based on the diffilculty of connected skills, execution, artistry.
Now, to the scoring aspect. There are two scores: execution and difficulty and the final score of a gymnast is the total of these two.
