Haflong, 18th August 2026: A meeting was held by Principal Secretary, North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council at the council’s officer’s conference hall to discuss about the upcoming programme by the ICAR- National Research Centre on Mithun. Officials from Animal Husbandry and Veterinary dept. informed during the meeting about the programme which is scheduled for 1st September next in Haflong.

As informed by the
department, Haflong in the state of Assam has been chosen as the venue for the
next Mithun Day programme to be organised as it’s 4th edition. The earlier
three editions were held at Nagaland, Arunachal and Mizoram respectively. Mithun,
was officially recognised as a food animal by the Food Safety and Standards
Authority of India (FSSAI) with effect from September 1, 2023 during the first
edition of the Mithun Day held at Nagaland.
The 4th Mithun Day will be
celebrated on 1st September 2026 in Dima Hasao District of Assam with the theme
"Integrated Mithun Farming for Sustainable Livelihood and Biodiversity
Conservation." The programme aims to bring together scientists, farmers,
extension personnel, students, development agencies, entrepreneurs,
stakeholders and policy makers to promote awareness and strengthen
collaborative efforts for the conservation and development of Mithun in
Northeastern hill region of India.
As it is known that the highest
concentration of Mithun in the world is spread over North-East region of India.
Recognising Mithun (Bos frontalis), a magnificient bovine is an integral part
of the socio-cultural, economic, and traditional life of the tribal communities
of Northeast India, iIt is also regarded as a symbol of wealth, prestige, and
social status among many tribal societies of the Northeastern hill region
including hilly areas of Dimahasao, Assam. Mithun contributes significantly to
the conservation of forest-based ecosystems through its sustainable free-range
rearing system, which is closely linked with the traditional ecological
knowledge of indigenous communities.
Recognizing the importance of this unique bovine species, Mithun Day is
celebrated annually on 01 September by the ICAR-National Research Centre. The
celebration of the 4th Mithun Day & National Seminar on Integrated Mithun
Farming for Sustainable Livelihood and Biodiversity Conservation is expected to
strengthen awareness on the importance of Mithun conservation and scientific
farming practices, encourage youth participation and entrepreneurship in Mithun-based
farming systems, promote sustainable livelihood opportunities for tribal
communities, and facilitate interaction among stakeholders for future
development strategies related to Mithun in Northeastern Hill region.
As the organizers gears up the preparations, the dignitaries expected to
attend are Assam Cabinet Ministers, DDG, ADG, Directors, Head of Institutes and
Universities, scientists, faculties and veterinary experts etc.
