Media Sensitization meeting Held on HPV vaccination Campaign in Dima Hasao

 Haflong, 18th May, 2026:       A media interaction meeting regarding the HPV Vaccination Campaign was conducted by the Health Department to spread awareness about cervical cancer prevention and the importance of timely vaccination among adolescent girls. It was informed that the HPV vaccination campaign was started from 17 March and would continue for a period of three months.

During the meeting, Joint Director of Health Services, Dr. Sarsing Rongpi  stated that Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a very common viral infection that can later cause cervical cancer in women. Cervical cancer is a cancer that develops in the cervix, the lower part of the uterus in women. It is mainly caused by persistent infection with certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV), a very common virus transmitted through contact.

Dr. Marina Changsan, District  Immunisation Officer, appealed to media personnel and the public to actively support the campaign by spreading correct information, reducing myths and misinformation, and encouraging eligible girls to receive the HPV vaccine. It was informed that vaccines are being supplied through Cold Chain Points to ensure safe storage and proper distribution. The vaccine is being made available free of cost at all Government Hospitals.

Dr. Nenei Hrangkhol briefed the media on how the HPV virus spreads and explained that the infection is commonly transmitted through close skin-to-skin contact. It was informed that HPV infection often does not show symptoms in the early stages, making awareness, screening, and vaccination very important for prevention and early protection. It was informed that the HPV vaccine is being administered to girls aged 14–15 years under the ongoing campaign. The vaccine was described as safe, effective, and approved by health authorities. It was further informed that the vaccine provides protection against the types of HPV responsible for most cervical cancer cases.

During the meeting, it was shared that the campaign target is progressing successfully, with 332 beneficiaries already covered out of the remaining 1432 target beneficiaries. The campaign isbeing implemented through schools and health facilities with support from education departments, ASHA, ANM and media persons.

The Health Department encourages parents, schools , community leaders, and media partners to support HPV vaccination efforts for healthier future for girls and women.
